Many of our churches teach that eternal life can be earned. So that you can know for sure that eternal life is a precious gift from God that cannot be earned but rather is received by faith in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, read the following passages from the Bible:

JOHN 3:16-17
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.” NASB

EPHESIANS 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. NASB

JOHN 5:24
“Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” NASB

TITUS 3:5-7
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we did in righteousness, but in accordance with His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He richly poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. NASB

ROMANS 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. NASB

LUKE 23:39-43
One of the criminals who were hanged [next to Jesus] was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”

But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” NASB

ACTS 16:25-33
Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them; and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!” And the jailer asked for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas; and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

And they spoke the word of God to him together with all who were in his house. And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. NASB

ROMANS 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. NASB

ROMANS 4:5-8
But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.” NASB

GALATIANS 3:11
Now, that no one is justified by the Law [i.e., the Ten Commandments] before God is evident; for, “THE RIGHTEOUS ONE WILL LIVE BY FAITH.” NASB

ROMANS 3:21-23
But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, but it is the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. NASB

REVELATION 22:17
And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires, take the water of life without cost. NASB

JOHN 4:10
Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” NASB

ROMANS 10:13
“EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” NASB

ACTS 2:38
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” NASB
